Lando Norris has admitted McLaren had “no excuses” for missing out on victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, after being undercut by Kimi Antonelli in a decisive strategic moment.
Norris initially took the lead following the safety car restart, but lost track position when Mercedes opted to pit earlier on lap 27. The undercut provided Antonelli with optimal tyre temperature and clean air, advantages that proved difficult to overcome at a circuit with limited overtaking opportunities.
Throughout the second half of the race, Norris remained within 1 to 1.5 seconds of Antonelli but was unable to mount a sustained attack. Energy deployment limitations and tyre degradation played a critical role, requiring precise timing for overtaking attempts without compromising subsequent lap performance.

Reflecting on the race, Norris acknowledged that strategy execution was the defining factor behind the outcome.
"We just got undercut, there are no excuses. We should have boxed first. Kimi did a good job, and Mercedes did a good race."
The British driver also highlighted the technical demands of the race, particularly in managing energy systems and braking zones under pressure.
"It was about who made the fewest mistakes. You have to be very tactical with battery use, and it’s easy to get caught out. I didn’t have the pace to get back past him."
Despite missing out on victory, the result marks Norris’ first podium of the season and underlines McLaren’s improving competitiveness. With the performance gap to Mercedes narrowing, strategic precision will be key as the team heads into the next round of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
