Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Nigel Mansell has expressed his hope that Lewis Hamilton can secure a record-breaking eighth world championship with Scuderia Ferrari, describing the prospect as a “romantic” scenario in Formula 1.
The 1992 world champion acknowledged the strength of the current grid, particularly younger rivals such as Lando Norris of McLaren, but insisted Hamilton still has the capability to add to his seven titles before the end of his career.
“I’m going to be romantic—I’d like Lewis to do it,” Mansell told Sky Sports F1.
“Lando has many years ahead of him; he can do it again.”
Hamilton endured a difficult 2025 season in his first year with Ferrari, finishing sixth in the championship without securing a grand prix podium. However, his form has improved in 2026, including a podium finish in China, placing him fourth in the current standings.
Ferrari’s progress has been evident, but the team continues to trail Mercedes, which has emerged as the early benchmark under the new regulations. Alongside McLaren, Ferrari remains part of a competitive group at the front, shaping a multi-team title contest.
Mansell believes this competitive balance could play a decisive role, particularly as potential regulatory adjustments later in the season may narrow performance gaps between teams.
“Lewis is fired up again. He’s had a brilliant career, and it’s fantastic what he’s doing,” Mansell said.
“Ferrari has done a great job over the winter. They are there or thereabouts, Mercedes are the frontrunners, and McLaren will be there too.”
Beyond the championship fight, Mansell also backed Hamilton to achieve a historic milestone at the British Grand Prix. The former Ferrari driver suggested Hamilton has a strong chance of securing a 10th victory at Silverstone Circuit.
“Odds on—Lewis has a great chance,” he stated.
Mansell further predicted that by the time Formula 1 reaches Silverstone, the field could be even more closely matched, potentially producing one of the most competitive races of the season.
“I think by Silverstone it will be very close, and I’m hoping for an epic race. There could be six or seven drivers capable of winning,” he added.
As the 2026 season unfolds, Hamilton’s pursuit of an eighth title remains one of the defining narratives. With Ferrari showing signs of progress and the competitive order tightening, the coming races will be critical in determining whether he can convert renewed momentum into a historic championship achievement.
