Franco Morbidelli is set to leave MotoGP at the end of 2026 and join Ducati's factory squad in WorldSBK. The 31-year-old Italian is tipped to replace Nicolo Bulega at Aruba.it Racing – Ducati for the 2027 season. If confirmed, he will partner Iker Lecuona, who is under contract until 2028.
The decision has raised eyebrows. Manuel Gonzalez was strongly linked to the seat, but Ducati ultimately opted for Morbidelli's experience. Support comes from top Ducati executives, including CEO Claudio Domenicali and Ducati Corse General Manager Gigi Dall'Igna, who believe Morbidelli still has untapped speed.
Morbidelli is no stranger to success. He claimed the Moto2 title in 2017, then won three MotoGP races in 2020 and finished runner-up to Joan Mir. But his career has since stalled. Injuries and difficult years at Yamaha hampered his consistency, even after moving to Pramac Ducati and now VR46 Racing.

Aruba.it Racing Team Manager Serafino Foti has long admired Morbidelli. "I believe Franco has enormous talent," he said. Ducati appears to be replicating their success with Bulega, whose career was revived in WorldSBK after struggling in MotoGP. The difference is Morbidelli has already proven himself at the highest level, so the goal is to restore his consistency.
Immediate Pressure in 2027
Morbidelli's arrival in WorldSBK won't be a smooth ride. Aruba.it Racing currently dominates the championship, with Bulega winning 23 of the first 24 races in 2026. Morbidelli will be expected to win from the very first race. He has prior experience in this paddock, having won the European Superstock 600 title in 2013 before moving to MotoGP.
Another factor in his favor is the tire switch in 2027, from Pirelli to Michelin. Morbidelli is very familiar with Michelin tires from his MotoGP days, which could give him a significant adaptation advantage.
Ultimately, this decision shows Ducati prioritizes proven potential over long-term projects. Morbidelli has a high ceiling, and the challenge is to rediscover that level on the Ducati Panigale V4 R. If successful, this could be one of the most intriguing transfers ahead of the 2027 WorldSBK season.
Meanwhile, Manuel Gonzalez is set to stay in Moto2 for 2027. His WorldSBK opportunities evaporated after Ducati chose Morbidelli, and the BMW seat he was linked to went to Brad Binder. Gonzalez is now expected to extend his contract with the LIQUI Moly Dynavolt Intact GP team.
