Mercedes has finally confirmed that its next major upgrade package for the W17 will make its debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The announcement ends speculation about when the Silver Arrows would bring new parts, having last introduced a significant update back in May at the Canadian GP.
The decision comes amid Formula 1's intense 2026 development war, where every team is pushing power unit and chassis upgrades to find crucial lap time. As a result, the competitive order changes almost every race. Mercedes, which dominated early on, has seen McLaren snatch two consecutive wins in Hungary and Zandvoort with Lando Norris, plus a serious threat in Spain.
Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin gave a hint about the timing of the package. “The updates are going to come from Malaysia onwards,” he said on the Silver Arrows radio show. “Hopefully we’ll make a decent step. I don’t think we’re going to be out front by miles, but hopefully we’ll be back into a position where we can really go into qualifying knowing that we’re fighting for pole.”
Shovlin also highlighted the characteristics of the Baku circuit, which will be the next challenge before the upgrade arrives. According to him, the Azerbaijan street circuit demands drag efficiency rather than pure downforce. “We haven’t got much new coming to Baku, but actually that’s a circuit that’s more about drag than downforce. The car was good in Monza. Hopefully it will work well in Baku, but you need a car that can have good straight-line speed. There are other things you need in Baku, like the street circuit nature, almost that Monaco-esque, being able to deal with the low speed, keeping all the wheels on the ground,” he explained.
Despite McLaren's pressure, Mercedes seems to have not lost confidence. Shovlin admitted that without the strong showing at Monza, they might be more concerned heading to Baku. “I think if we hadn’t had Monza, we would again be saying, ‘Baku, we haven’t updated for a while, that’s going to be a tough circuit for us’. I think the fact that we showed that our car works well at these tracks that need low drag, we have an efficient car, we look good in a straight line, Red Bull are quite similar, and while that’s not the only thing you need at Baku, I think, if you’ve got that, you’re in with a decent shout,” he added.
Furthermore, Shovlin stressed that the team remains optimistic for the rest of the season. “But we’re looking forward to it, and it is a track that George has been good at before. Kimi knows it now; it’s not his first year, and hopefully we’ll be in a position to fight for a win,” he concluded.
With the upcoming upgrade, Mercedes hopes to return to the early-season form that made them the team to beat. If the Bahrain package works as planned, the 2026 title fight could heat up again.
