Kimi Antonelli is enjoying a sensational second season in Formula 1. The young Mercedes driver now leads the drivers' championship, a position few would have predicted before the season began. Behind his stellar performances lies Peter 'Bono' Bonnington, the race engineer who has worked with giants like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
Former F1 race engineer Rob Smedley heaped praise on Bonnington's influence. Speaking on the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley said, "Bono is everything. Everything. The engineer should get everything. Without the engineer, these lads would be nowhere." He added, "He deserves some credit because he keeps him on the straight and narrow. He gives him all the information he needs. But Kimi's the pedal bracket, he's the one who's got to deliver on a Sunday afternoon."
Antonelli himself acknowledges how fortunate he is to have Bonnington. "Having someone like Bono is amazing. It's a very big privilege because he has worked with two of the best drivers in the history of Formula 1 – Michael and then Lewis for so many years," he said during the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix weekend.
This partnership has proven effective. Antonelli secured back-to-back wins in China and Japan, then added a victory in Spain. He now holds an 81-point advantage over teammate George Russell, who sits second in the standings. Many questioned whether the 20-year-old could handle the pressure, but he has only grown stronger.
Bonnington's role is undeniable. As an engineer who has managed Schumacher and Hamilton, he knows how to craft strategies, provide technical feedback, and keep a driver's mentality sharp. Smedley noted, "He gives him all the information needed. But ultimately, the driver must execute."
Otmar Szafnauer, former Alpine team principal and podcast co-host, highlighted the importance of two-way communication. "Antonelli is part of the feedback loop, too. He tells Bono what he wants, and Bono does it." This solid collaboration is key to Mercedes' dominance so far.
With eight grand prix victories already, Antonelli is growing in confidence. If he and Bonnington maintain their consistency, a first world title could be on the horizon. Clearly, behind every great driver is an engineer whose vital role often goes unnoticed.
