The final stretch of the 2026 Formula 1 season serves a dual purpose for McLaren, acting both as a push in the constructors' championship and a vital testing ground for next year's car concepts. The Woking-based squad confirmed that its final batch of development parts will evaluate fundamental ideas destined for the 2027 machine.

Team principal Andrea Stella outlined the late-season upgrade strategy following the Singapore Grand Prix, noting that the updates will be rolled out sequentially across three distinct rounds: Austin, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo. This spread across tracks with contrasting characteristics allows the engineering group to thoroughly verify the full aerodynamic package under various loads.

With aerodynamic development having matured significantly over two years of intensive iteration since January 2025, introducing track-side tests for foundational 2027 concepts became a logical priority. Stella emphasized that complex aerodynamic pathways at this stage of the regulations require real-world validation to avoid missteps.

"We do plan to deliver some upgrades. We hope that they will be able to fill this gap that we have to the best cars and put McLaren in condition to fight for podiums on merit," Stella stated regarding the immediate performance goals of the new parts.

Elaborating on the long-term testing aspect, Stella added: "And then whether we can fight for the victory, this I think we will have to see probably in the last three races, because the upgrades will be delivered in phases. It's important for us that we deliver upgrades because we are in a close fight for a championship position. But we also want to prove some of the fundamental concepts that will carry into next year's car."

This development push arrives as Lando Norris and Oscar-Piastri face mounting pressure in the standings. McLaren is currently fighting to hold off a resurgent Red Bull—now sitting just seven points behind—while attempting to close a substantial gap to Ferrari ahead.
