McLaren has officially announced plans to sell five of its most historic Formula 1 race cars, spanning over three decades of the team's illustrious heritage in the motorsport pinnacle. The Woking-based outfit has entrusted high-end specialist Tom Hartley Jr., who recently managed Bernie Ecclestone’s grand prix collection, to handle the exclusive sale of these motorsport masterpieces to elite global collectors.
The crown jewel of the collection is undoubtedly the 1991 McLaren MP4/6A, associated with Ayrton Senna's third and final world championship campaign. Two specific chassis, Number 4 and Number 7, are up for grabs; while Senna tested both during that memorable season, they were raced competitively by his teammate Gerhard Berger, cementing their status as vital pieces of Formula 1 history.
Also featured in the lineup is the McLaren MP4/27A Chassis No.1 from the 2012 season, a machine that powered Jenson Button to victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. This exact car was also driven to triumphs by Lewis Hamilton during his final year with the team before his high-profile switch to Mercedes, highlighting the remarkable winning pedigree of the Woking chassis.

Modern era contenders complete the offering, including the 2021 MCL35M—which marked McLaren's reunion with Mercedes power units and delivered a famous win in Italy—alongside the 2023 charger driven by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to nine podium finishes. McLaren CEO Zak Brown emphasized that keeping these machines locked in storage does a disservice to their racing DNA.
"We have decided to part with these iconic McLaren Formula 1 cars because we feel that having them simply sitting in storage is a disservice to what they represent," Zak Brown stated regarding the decision to clear out part of the team's historic inventory.
Brown further elaborated, "These cars were built to be driven and raced, and we want to see them being used and enjoyed. We believe that is the best way to keep our history alive and our heritage business active. Tom Hartley Jnr is the person we have entrusted to handle the sale."
