Formula 1, Sportrik Media - McLaren has taken a contrasting approach during the 2026 F1 pre-season test at the Bahrain International Circuit by running what is expected to be its opening-round aerodynamic package.

The reigning constructors’ champion equipped the MCL40 with a specification believed to be close to its Melbourne configuration. Oscar Piastri handled driving duties during the morning session on Day 1, before handing over to Lando Norris for the afternoon and evening running.

Piastri set the second-fastest time in the opening four hours, finishing just one tenth of a second behind Max Verstappen at the top of the timing sheets.

McLaren’s strategy differs from most rivals, who are incrementally introducing upgrades across the two official Bahrain tests. Several teams are expected to arrive in Melbourne with significantly revised aerodynamic packages.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur previously indicated that the Scuderia ran a Spec-A car during the private Barcelona shakedown, with substantial changes planned for Bahrain and beyond.

Sky Sports F1 analyst Ted Kravitz highlighted McLaren’s contrasting philosophy.

“McLaren have done something different in that they have waited as late as they could to put what is pretty much the first-race aero package on their car,” he explained.

Meanwhile, rivals such as Mercedes and Aston Martin continue to evaluate evolving configurations.

Beyond the power unit overhaul dominating headlines, technical attention in Sakhir has also focused on chassis and aerodynamic concepts. Audi introduced a distinctive sidepod inlet solution, while the first Adrian Newey-designed Aston Martin has drawn significant scrutiny.

McLaren’s early commitment to a stable aerodynamic specification signals confidence in its data correlation and development direction as the 2026 F1 season approaches.
