Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has issued a stern warning regarding the alarming state of circuit surfaces, expressing deep concern that Formula 1 drivers face severe risks of spinal injuries if out-of-control track bumps are left unaddressed. The Dutchman pointed directly to the ongoing issues at the Circuit of the Americas as a prime example of superficial fixes failing to resolve fundamental structural problems beneath the asphalt.
While circuit management implemented partial resurfacing initiatives ahead of this season's grand prix—smoothing areas from the entry of Turn 9 to Turn 11 as well as sections around Turns 12 and 19—the Red Bull star believes these efforts merely act as temporary band-aids over a much deeper geographical issue rooted in the shifting soil conditions of the Texas venue.
Verstappen stressed that while he considers the layout of the Austin facility to be one of the absolute finest in motorsport, the severity of the vertical impacts experienced by drivers under heavy braking zones has crossed an unacceptable threshold. Modern aerodynamic regulations force these machines to run aggressively low to the ground through high-speed turns, causing heavy bottoming out when cars hunker down under deceleration.

Detailing the physical toll on his own body, the championship leader revealed that vertical loads exceeding 9G have directly hammered his spine during recent race weekends. As a veteran of the sport, he admits that medical checks on the lower portion of his back show worrying signs, prompting a demand for comprehensive civil engineering overhauls rather than routine surface grinding.
"Last year, you pulled around 5-6G in a corner, but I had some impacts like vertical load, which was like over 9G on my spine, which I can tell you is really not fun," Verstappen stated, emphasizing that long-term health consequences in elite motorsport require far more serious attention from governing bodies.
