Max Verstappen has refused to engage with speculation linking him to a move to McLaren for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The four-time world champion insisted that any genuine change regarding his future would be communicated directly by him rather than through outside reports.
The speculation intensified after reports claimed that Verstappen’s management met McLaren CEO Zak Brown during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend. The meeting was described as involving preliminary discussions over a possible deal, although there has been no official confirmation that the contact developed into contract negotiations.
Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028. However, his agreement is reported to contain an exit clause that could allow him to leave for 2027 if he is not inside the top two in the drivers’ championship by an unspecified date in August.

“I’m not going to involve myself in that. I said what I wanted to say already before,” Verstappen told media including Crash.net.
The Dutch driver added that any new development would come directly from him. His immediate attention remains on Red Bull after the team demonstrated improved performance at the Austrian Grand Prix.
“If there’s something new or something that changes, you will hear it from me. I just focus on the job that I have with my team. We are on the way up, so that’s really nice to see,” he said.
Verstappen’s championship position means the reported clause will continue to attract attention before the summer break. The next three rounds, including the British Grand Prix, could determine whether the contractual condition becomes relevant.
McLaren would also face a significant obstacle if it seriously attempted to sign Verstappen. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are both tied to long-term contracts, meaning one of them would have to give up a seat to create space.
Norris responded by noting that several drivers are interested in joining McLaren. He also stated that he believes he can beat any competitor, including Verstappen, while recognising the Dutchman’s ability to deliver at an elite level consistently across an entire season.
Verstappen neither confirmed nor directly rejected the possibility of a future move, but his response made clear that the discussion is not currently his public priority. Until an official statement is issued, his future will remain dependent on Red Bull’s progress, his championship position and the contractual situation approaching the 2026 summer break.
