Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing have endured a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, prompting renewed scrutiny over the reigning champion’s long-term future.
Since the introduction of the 2026 regulations, Verstappen has been openly critical of the new technical framework, citing a reduced level of driving enjoyment. That sentiment has been compounded by Red Bull’s lack of competitiveness in the opening rounds, with Verstappen collecting just 12 points across the first three races. The combination of performance limitations and regulatory dissatisfaction has intensified speculation that the four-time world champion could seek an alternative path in his career.
The strongest indication of uncertainty emerged following the Japanese Grand Prix, where Verstappen confirmed he is evaluating his Formula 1 future beyond the current season. At the same time, persistent links to Mercedes-AMG Petronas continue to circulate, despite George Russell reaffirming his commitment to the team for next year. A potential move to McLaren has also been discussed within the paddock, particularly after confirmation that his long-time race engineer, GianPiero Lambiase, is set to join the team in the future.

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the relationship between Verstappen and Red Bull remains fundamentally strong despite current challenges. He emphasized the longstanding connection between Verstappen, his family, and the Red Bull structure based in Austria.
“I don’t foresee a scenario where the relationship between Max and Red Bull is completely severed,” Coulthard told ServusTV.
“However, nothing lasts forever in this sport, and Max is an extremely competitive driver.”
Coulthard added that Verstappen’s future decisions will ultimately depend on Red Bull’s ability to demonstrate a return to competitive form within the current season. Should the team struggle to re-establish itself at the front, a reassessment of career direction would be a logical step for the Dutch driver.
“If Red Bull are struggling over the course of this season to show signs of returning to winning ways, then of course he will look at where his career is best served,” he continued.
Beyond Formula 1, Verstappen remains actively involved in GT racing projects linked to Red Bull, underlining his broader commitment to motorsport. Nevertheless, Coulthard expressed hope that Verstappen will remain on the Formula 1 grid, given his status as the benchmark driver of the current era.
“Max is a racer. If he still feels that competitive drive, he will stay. I hope he remains in Formula 1 because he is the benchmark and has dominated the sport,” Coulthard concluded.
With a contract in place until the end of 2028, reportedly including performance-related exit clauses, Verstappen’s situation remains one of the central narratives of the 2026 season. Red Bull’s trajectory in the upcoming races, beginning with the Miami Grand Prix, is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the next phase of his career.
