Max Verstappen Eyes 2027 Spa 24 Hours Entry After GT World Challenge Debut

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is actively working to secure an entry for the prestigious 2027 Spa 24 Hours endurance classic. The Dutch superstar shared his ambitious endurance plans ahead of his maiden GT World Challenge Europe weekend at Portimao, highlighting his deep affection and strong personal connection to the legendary Belgian circuit.

With no scheduling conflicts anticipated between the Formula 1 calendar and the grueling Belgian endurance classic next year, the Red Bull Racing dominator sees a perfect window of opportunity. The track's close proximity to the Dutch border alongside his own Belgian heritage provide compelling reasons for the champion to map out a competitive campaign.

"I love Spa of course, so I’m trying to make it work, as I want to arrive well prepared," Verstappen stated regarding his long-term endurance aspirations. Beyond simply participating, he also revealed his future dream lineup: "We’ve not yet raced together in real life, but I hope one day we can do that," pointing to five-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou as his ultimate preferred co-driver.

However, his opening outing in GT World Challenge Europe brought an immediate baptism of fire on the Portuguese tarmac. Taking the opening stint in the #3 Mercedes-AMG, Verstappen attempted an aggressive inside move on Ezequiel Perez Companc’s #25 Sainteloc Audi at Turn 3 during the very first lap, resulting in an unavoidable spin for the Audi.

The race stewards investigated the incident thoroughly, judging Verstappen wholly to blame for an avoidable collision. Taking mitigating factors into account—such as the opening lap chaos and traffic ahead affecting the Audi's racing line—the stewards issued a formal reprimand and a single behavioral warning point rather than a severe grid sanction, allowing Ben Barnicoat and the team to refocus on the upcoming qualifying sessions.
