Jorge Martin breathed a sigh of relief after finishing second at the Austrian Grand Prix. It wasn't just the podium that lifted his spirits, but the news that surgery on his arm is now off the table. The Aprilia Racing rider stated, “No more doubts, I don't need surgery.”
Martin arrived at the Red Bull Ring with a heavy mind. Since the previous round at Misano, arm issues had forced him to undergo various checks. Speculation about an operating table loomed. However, after a trouble-free weekend, he received clarity.
“I came here with many questions about my physical condition, but everything went well. So I can avoid surgery and that's important,” said Jorge Martin. “The last thing I want is them cutting open my arm. I just want to rest, because these two weeks have been intense.”
According to the Spaniard, tension may have played a role in his Misano issues. “Maybe I was more tense in Misano, I don't know. Something happened that limited me. Here I felt good from Friday and all the treatments I undergo are working. I'm someone who doubts a lot and I've had a difficult week.”
At the Red Bull Ring, Martin could attack fully again. He got a good start and tried to save tires and fuel after being overtaken by Pedro Acosta. That strategy was to prepare for a late-race attack. But the chance never came. “I was very competitive all weekend. Today I gave everything. When Pedro passed me, I thought it was a good moment to manage my tires and fuel so I could attack in the final part. But Pedro managed the race perfectly and today he was simply unbeatable.”
Despite not winning, Martin was satisfied with second place. “I think we got the maximum out of it. I'm happy with my performance and I leave Austria as championship leader heading to Asia. If you told me a few months ago this was possible, I'd say it was impossible. The fight is wide open and we're ready.”
Martin also praised Acosta highly. According to him, his compatriot made the difference especially in the second sector. “I think Pedro fought for more than just a win today. I want to congratulate him, it's absolutely a fantastic first victory and I know how that feels. He was very consistent and braked like a beast in turns 3 and 5.”
In other parts of the Red Bull Ring, Martin saw hardly any difference. “In the rest of the circuit we were quite equal, but he had the edge in that sector. Anyway, I leave Austria with positive feelings. Now it's time to rest and prepare for the Asian races.”
