Marc Marquez stormed to victory at the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, following up his sprint race win a day earlier. The triumph puts him level on points with the championship leader, signaling a thrilling turn in the MotoGP title race.
The race was action-packed from the start. Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia grabbed the holeshot from pole and led into Turn 1, with Marquez in tow. But disaster struck for the Italian at Turn 12 when he lost control of his RS GP-25 and crashed out, dealing a massive blow to his title hopes as he now trails Marquez and Martin by 33 points.
Behind, Jorge Martin, who started fifth, quickly carved his way to third after passing Fermin Aldeguer and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Martin briefly took the lead on Lap 7, but Marquez fought back and reclaimed the top spot at the final corner on Lap 12. Martin then faded with arm pump issues and eventually finished fifth.
Marquez's win was made even sweeter by his brother Alex Marquez finishing second, completing a Marquez one-two. Pedro Acosta rounded out the podium ahead of Aldeguer and Martin. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia suffered his fourth DNF in five races after crashing out of ninth at Turn 2.
“We had a good race and I’m happy, especially since Misano is the home race for Ducati, but it was a tough one,” said Marquez. “When I saw Bezzecchi’s crash, I planned the race differently and maybe relaxed a bit too much. Little by little, I got back to my best pace and recovered the feeling I had yesterday. In the second part, I managed my lead and when Alex got closer, I pushed again.”
With this result, Marquez now shares the points lead with Martin, while Bezzecchi drops back. The title fight intensifies as the series heads to Austria, where Bagnaia hopes to turn his season around.
