The physical condition of Marc Marquez has once again become the spotlight ahead of the Aragon Grand Prix. This anti-clockwise circuit is believed to be a hidden advantage for the Ducati rider, especially after he admitted to losing control of his right arm at Silverstone. Statistics show that Marquez has won 61% of his races on anti-clockwise circuits throughout his career, including two victories in 2026 in Hungary and Germany.
Since his right arm injury in 2020 and shoulder issues that worsened last October, circuits with this characteristic actually help Marquez reduce the strain on his weaker side. Thus, he can ride more freely and aggressively. This advantage is crucial as he trails Jorge Martin by 40 points in the standings after failing to finish at Silverstone.
Marquez himself admitted that he was too aggressive early in the Silverstone weekend, leaving him with no energy for the main race. “I had no control over my right arm,” he said in Ducati’s onboard camera footage. He brought that lesson to Aragon, where he appeared more cautious yet still competitive. In the first free practice session, he immediately led, though he was eventually shuffled to third by Marco Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez with a slim 0.038s gap.
MotoGP analyst Cal Crutchlow likened Marquez’s 2026 season to an “endurance race”, where he must seize big opportunities and limit damage elsewhere. This is a different approach from his usual style, but effective in a title fight. Aragon presents a golden opportunity to reduce the gap, especially with a tricky run of races ahead.
After Aragon, MotoGP heads to Austria, where Michelin returns to a stiffer tyre casing—conditions that favour Aprilia and work against Ducati. Misano, a fast right-handed track, is also not ideal for Marquez, while Motegi, the hardest on braking, runs clockwise. Thus, Aragon is a critical moment to trim the deficit before facing these challenges.
However, calling Aragon a “must-win” might be over-egging it. Yet, this opportunity is too valuable to waste in a title battle that demands a different strategy. Marquez has shown he remains the favourite on this circuit, and if he can maximise his potential, his critical edge will become even more evident.
