Mario Andretti might not be a strange name to Formula 1 fans. However, did you know that his last victory in this series happened at Zandvoort, Netherlands, on August 27, 1978? Yes, exactly 48 years ago, the driver nicknamed 'Piedone' stood on the top step of the podium, etching an unforgettable history, not only for himself but also for the Lotus team.
At that time, Mario Andretti and his teammate, Ronnie Peterson, managed to score a 1-2 finish which became the last double for Lotus in Formula 1. This victory also determined the constructors' world title for the British team, marking the end of their golden era.
Dominance of 'Black Beauty'
The 1978 season indeed belonged to Lotus. With the legendary Lotus 79 car nicknamed 'Black Beauty' thanks to the black livery of sponsor John Player Special, Colin Chapman's team was superior. Out of 16 races held, Lotus won 8 of them, with Andretti contributing 6 wins. This impressive performance led Andretti to win the drivers' world championship for the first and only time, also becoming the last American driver to do so after Phil Hill.
Arriving in the Netherlands as the championship leader, Andretti needed a perfect result to seal the title earlier. Qualifying went smoothly, with Andretti taking pole position ahead of Peterson. When the race started, both immediately sprinted and were never caught. Meanwhile, behind, Niki Lauda driving the Brabham-Alfa Romeo had to settle for third place. The fierce battle was actually outside the podium, with John Watson and Emerson Fittipaldi moving up several positions after taking advantage of technical problems that hit the Ferraris of Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve.
This victory was Andretti's 12th of his career, but unfortunately it was his last. Although he remained with Lotus until 1980, he failed to add more wins, including when he drove for Alfa Romeo in 1981 and a few races with Ferrari in 1982. Even so, his name remains remembered as one of racing legends, and the moment at Zandvoort is proof of his greatness.
