Lewis Hamilton has finally broken his silence after making a costly decision that cost him a podium finish at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion appeared on course to secure third place before his race unravelled when he took it upon himself to try and last it out on a mammoth 44-lap stint on soft tyres.
The move saw him ignore a call from the Ferrari pit wall to follow team-mate Charles Leclerc into the pits under a virtual safety car period. This strategic gamble proved disastrous for the veteran British driver, who tumbled off the podium and ultimately crossed the finish line in sixth place as his tyre degradation peaked.
After crossing the chequered flag, Hamilton immediately apologised to the Scuderia for letting down the team. The driver was excused from his usual media duties after feeling unwell following the grueling race, meaning his thought process was initially communicated only through team-released statements before his own social media post.

Addressing the matter publicly for the first time, Hamilton admitted that the disappointing outcome was entirely on him. "Yesterday wasn’t the result we were looking for, and that’s on me," Hamilton wrote on Instagram, explaining that at a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult, he felt compelled to try an alternative strategy.
"At a track that’s difficult to overtake you need to try something different, and I chose a strategy that ultimately didn’t deliver. It’s a painful lesson to learn, but I take full responsibility for the decisions I made," he added, vowing to bounce back stronger at the upcoming United States Grand Prix as the championship battle intensifies.
