Marco Bezzecchi suffered a heavy crash during the 2026 Assen MotoGP, with Aprilia Racing concluding that the accident was caused by carrying too much speed through Turn 15.
Bezzecchi lost control through the ultra-fast left-hander on lap two while running fourth behind Marc Marquez. He was sent into the gravel after a high-energy crash, but was later seen sitting upright and speaking with marshals.
Massimo Rivola said Aprilia's initial assessment of the incident was straightforward. The Aprilia Racing CEO believed Bezzecchi had simply carried too much entry speed into the corner despite showing strong pace throughout the weekend.

"It is a shame about Marco's mistake. On a weekend where he had shown such great speed, he should have achieved much more. However, the priority now is to recover as best he can after the bad crash," Rivola said.

Rivola also stressed that Aprilia's strength at Assen was not limited to Turn 15 but extended across the circuit's fastest sections. He said the manufacturer must focus on extracting the maximum from all four bikes rather than only three.
"I honestly think the Aprilia was not strong just in Turn 15. In all the very fast parts of the circuit, the Aprilia normally shows something special. But we need to get the maximum with all four bikes, not just three," Rivola added.
Initial medical checks at the circuit confirmed Bezzecchi was fully conscious, had normal mobility in all four limbs and showed no immediate signs of major neurological or systemic complications. However, due to severe pain from the high-energy impact, the medical team transferred him to Groningen Hospital for further examinations.
Aprilia later confirmed that CT scans and radiological checks found no injuries, allowing Bezzecchi to travel home the same night. While that provided a positive medical outcome, the crash had major championship consequences as Bezzecchi lost the standings lead to teammate Jorge Martin.
Assen marked Bezzecchi's fourth non-score in the last six races, following his collision with Martin in Hungary and a Sprint crash at Brno before being suspended from the grand prix. Bezzecchi now trails Martin by nine points, making the next MotoGP round an important opportunity to respond after losing momentum in the 2026 title fight.
