Marc Marquez stormed to victory at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, seizing the MotoGP championship lead from Marco Bezzecchi on Sunday (6/9/2026). The Ducati rider's fifth win of the season came in dramatic fashion as his main rival, Bezzecchi, crashed out on the opening lap while leading in front of his home crowd.
Bezzecchi, who started from pole, grabbed the holeshot and was pulling away when he lost control of his Aprilia at Turn 13, suffering a high-speed crash. That handed the lead to Marquez, though he briefly lost it to Jorge Martin on the factory Aprilia on lap seven.
Martin built a lead of over eight tenths, but Marquez, the seven-time champion, upped his pace, closed in, and retook the lead at Turn 6 on lap 12. From there, he withstood intense late pressure from his younger brother, Alex Marquez, on the Gresini Ducati, to secure the win.
Alex Marquez finished just 0.657s behind in second, completing a Ducati 1-2. Pedro Acosta took third on the KTM for back-to-back podiums. Martin was shuffled back to fifth by Fermin Aldeguer on the other Gresini Ducati.
With this result, Marquez now leads the championship, level on points with Martin but ahead on win count. He becomes the first Ducati rider to lead the standings in 2026, having overturned a 102-point deficit after the Italian Grand Prix in late May. Only 14 of the 21 starters finished the race, with several crashes including Johann Zarco (LCR) late on and Jack Miller (Pramac) among the retirements.
The championship battle is now tighter than ever as Marquez and Martin share the points lead, while Bezzecchi's DNF drops him back. The next round will be crucial for Marquez to maintain momentum and for his rivals to respond.
