Marc Marquez may have never faced a challenge quite like this. Paul Trevathan, KTM crew chief for Pedro Acosta, has issued a startling warning that Acosta will be a "monster" for Marquez in MotoGP 2027. Trevathan, who has worked with the young Spaniard since his premier class debut in 2024, believes Acosta's character will test Marquez in ways he has never experienced.
Acosta, who just claimed his maiden premier class victory in Austria, is set to move to Ducati in 2027. There, he will become Marquez's teammate, taking the spot left by Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio, who are heading to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. While no official confirmation has been made regarding the crew chief lineup, it is expected that Acosta will be paired with one of Ducati's existing crew chiefs, likely Christian Gabbarini, who currently works with Francesco Bagnaia.
The bond between Acosta and Trevathan has grown strong over the past two and a half seasons. Trevathan has witnessed firsthand how Acosta has developed into one of the most formidable, yet often frustrated, riders on the grid. However, last weekend's victory in Austria seemed to lift a huge weight off Acosta's shoulders. A first MotoGP win is special for any rider, especially for one about to join the team of Marquez's teammate.
The last rider to move from KTM to become Marquez's teammate was Pol Espargaro. Unfortunately, Espargaro failed to secure a win and returned to KTM two seasons later without a single podium. But with Acosta, things feel different. He has proven he can win at the highest level, and Trevathan believes Acosta will bring a challenge that Marquez has not yet encountered.
"It's a massive challenge," Trevathan told TNT Sports after the Austrian MotoGP. "The fight starts already in the box. Marc has been the best at getting under the skin of his teammates and understanding how to get the company around him. But he's also never had anybody like Acosta next to him, either."
Trevathan added that Acosta possesses a different mentality. "Pedro even said to me, it's not about winning or losing, it's about trying. If Marquez beats him on the same bike, then he can walk away saying, 'Okay, the guy's better.' But Acosta really wants to put himself in that position to try."
Marc Marquez, now a nine-time world champion, is still regarded as one of the greatest riders of all time. However, Trevathan insists that Marquez has never faced a character as strong as Acosta. "Marc is a fantastic champion, a fantastic rider, and I take nothing away from him. But, like I said, I don't think he's really had a character, a monster next to him like Pedro. It will be fireworks for you guys, I tell you."
With Acosta's move to Ducati, the intra-team rivalry is set to heat up. Marquez, known as a master of psychological games, must prepare to face an opponent who is not only fast on track but also mentally tough. MotoGP 2027 is predicted to be one of the most thrilling seasons in history, with a fierce duel between two top generations of riders.
