Ahead of this weekend’s Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika, Marc Marquez delivered a blunt and sharp response regarding MotoGP’s newly overhauled weekend format for the 2027 season. The announcement of the new schedule sparked immediate discussions throughout the paddock after the championship introduced an extra qualifying session specifically designed to determine the grid for the Saturday sprint races.

Under the upcoming regulations, Friday will feature a 45-minute FP1 and a 30-minute FP2, followed immediately by a brand-new 15-minute qualifying session. Meanwhile, traditional Grand Prix qualifying will remain on Saturday ahead of the sprint race, and the Sunday morning warm-up session has been officially scrapped from the weekend schedule to accommodate the busier timeline.

When asked about the underlying motives behind the schedule changes, the multi-time world champion questioned the primary goal of the championship organizers. Speaking to Crash.net, Marc Marquez argued that the modifications would only place an unnecessary and intense physical burden on the competing riders.

"Yeah, the thing is, it’s interesting to understand what the main goal is of that change, because for the rider it’s only more intense, more demanding," Marc Marquez stated. Highlighting the lack of an official union to represent the riders’ collective interests against the management of MotoGP, the Spaniard added bluntly, "With the schedule, it’s enough. But we don’t decide. It is what it is, and we must shut up."

Concerns regarding the physical toll of the modern calendar were echoed by Pedro Acosta, who warned that the relentless format would inevitably shorten the careers of professional riders. When asked for his opinion on his future Ducati teammate’s assessment, Marc Marquez admitted that he completely agreed with the young sensation, noting that his own career is already nearing its conclusion.

Championship leader Jorge Martin offered a slightly more curious perspective on the technical aspects of the new schedule, yet he similarly criticized the series promoters for failing to consult the competitors. Jorge Martin emphasized that the organization rarely asks for the riders’ opinions before implementing massive rule changes, leaving them with little alternative in a sport where they lack formal unity.
