MotoGP 2027 New Format: Pecco Bagnaia Reaction and Low Turnout

Looking ahead to the future of premier class motorcycle racing, massive changes are officially on the horizon. According to FormulaPassion, a complete overhaul of the race weekend schedule will be implemented starting from the 2027 MotoGP season. This bold step is taken to accommodate a fresh dynamic, which includes reshaping the program to host a dedicated qualifying session for the increasingly popular Sprint race.

Under this brand-new structure, FP2 sessions will no longer count towards overall combined practice classifications. Instead, the Sprint Qualifying will immediately feature all riders on track for a high-intensity 15-minute shootout. Meanwhile, the classic Grand Prix Qualifying format will see all 22 riders battling it out on the asphalt right from the very start of Q1.

Reacting to these sweeping alterations, factory Ducati rider Pecco Bagnaia openly voiced his approval regarding the direction chosen by championship organizers. The Italian world champion acknowledged that this schedule reshuffle is a positive step forward for the premier class, although he pointed out the surprisingly low participation of his fellow riders during critical discussions.

Crucial debates concerning this regulatory revamp were attended by only a handful of competitors during the official gathering at the circuit. Pecco Bagnaia shed light on the situation, stating, “We talked. All the riders present in the Safety Commission in Motegi. There were four of us. We promoted the new format. Only four? Yes, as always. We talked about it and everything was clear. We understood why they did it and we only asked to add the Warm Up.”

Furthermore, the star rider emphasized the absolute necessity of bringing back the morning practice session for safety reasons and proper technical readiness. “They needed to talk about it with the teams, but I think it can be added. I think this format can be an improvement. But the Warm Up must be added, we cannot race without doing a few laps first. If we were to crash in the Sprint, we need to be ready and having the Warm Up is positive. We have always asked to have two different grids and not a single one. So for me it is positive,” Pecco Bagnaia concluded.
