Luca Marini has officially joined Tech3 for the 2027 MotoGP season. The move surprised many, as Marini is still under contract with Honda until the end of 2026. However, Tech3 CEO Guenther Steiner has a clear rationale: Marini's calm character and methodical approach are seen as the ideal foundation for a team in transition.
After three seasons with Ducati and three years with Honda, Marini will ride for a third manufacturer in his MotoGP career. The 850cc and Pirelli era marks a new chapter, and Tech3 needs an experienced rider to partner rookie Senna Agius. Steiner wants to ensure a smooth transition, and Marini is considered key.
"I've met him a few times now, for example at Monza during the F1 race we spent about 45 minutes together," Steiner said. "I think he can bring a lot to the team because he has a lot of experience here, and he is a very thoughtful person. He is not emotional, he thinks things through, and that's what I think we need here. Just calm down and move on."
Steiner added that he wants to build a methodical working culture at Tech3. "That's what I want to bring into Tech3: methodical working, making progress, giving ourselves time. Not being slow, but giving ourselves time to make the right decision. I think he will be a contributing factor to this, because some MotoGP riders are very anxious all the time. Sometimes it's a case of 'slow down to hurry up'."
Marini is known for his calm demeanor on the bike. Although he has yet to win in MotoGP, he has often shown consistency and provided valuable technical feedback. At Honda, he has been the leading RC213V rider this season and currently sits 11th in the world championship, an impressive feat given the bike's limitations.
Marini's departure from Honda leaves a big question mark. He will contest the final seven races with Honda before joining Tech3. Meanwhile, his Tech3 seat will be filled by Senna Agius, who steps up from Moto2. The Marini-Agius pairing is expected to help Tech3 challenge more strongly in the midfield.
On the other hand, Enea Bastianini will move to Trackhouse Aprilia, while Maverick Vinales has been left without a ride for 2027. Tech3's decision to sign Marini also ends speculation about Vinales's future. With the new lineup, Tech3 seems serious about building a long-term foundation.
For Marini, this is an exciting new challenge. He will work with a bike he doesn't know yet, but with the same approach: calm, methodical, and focused on progress. If successful, he could take Tech3 to the next level. As Steiner put it, "If you have a lot of good ingredients, you get a good soup."
