Looking Back at 10 of Motorsport's Most Crushing Defeats of the Decade
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
The last decade has been littered with heartbreak in motorsport.

The world of motorsport continually delivers emotional drama that balances delicately between the euphoria of victory and agonizing heartbreak. As reported by Speedcafe, the past decade's history is filled with tragic moments when certain triumphs vanished in a split second due to mechanical gremlins, dramatic on-track incidents, or last-lap errors. From the World Rally Championship and the endurance battle of Le Mans to Supercars, the scars left by these devastating defeats have profoundly impacted drivers and teams alike.

One of the most iconic dramas unfolded during the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours in the LMP1 category. Toyota, dominating the grueling race, looked poised to finally break their duck at the Circuit de la Sarthe. However, disaster struck when Kazuki Nakajima reported a sudden loss of power with merely six minutes remaining on the clock. The leading car shared with Sebastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson eventually crawled to a halt just before the finish line, handing an inherited victory to Porsche's lineup of Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas, and Neel Jani. The Japanese manufacturer's garage fell completely silent while their rivals celebrated a miraculous finish.

A similar tale of agony was endured by Ott Tanak during the 2016 World Rally Championship at Rally Poland. The Estonian driver was less than two special stages away from securing his maiden victory at the top tier of rallying. Unfortunately for Tanak, a cruel puncture shattered his tyres and forced him to surrender the lead, settling for a third-place finish. Fighting back tears, he voiced his immense frustration to the media. Tanak stated, "It’s worth nothing. The amount of work we put in in all this and in the end you get nothing. It’s too hard, it’s too hard."

Extreme tension also defined the chaotic conclusion of the 2017 Supercars season finale. Scott McLaughlin, sitting comfortably in the championship driving seat, committed a critical mistake on the second-to-last lap. The error triggered a chain reaction that saw him push Craig Lowndes into the concrete barrier. Following a subsequent time penalty for McLaughlin, the championship title was handed to Jamie Whincup. McLaughlin curled into a ball inside his Ford cockpit while his Australian adversary climbed the fence to celebrate his historic seventh title.

Championship heartbreaks extended into the 2021 DTM season when Red Bull thrust Liam Lawson into the intensely competitive German series. Lawson's title aspirations were effectively crushed at the very first turn when title rival Kelvin van der Linde made an aggressive three-wide move that pushed Nick Cassidy directly into Lawson's path. Bent steering relegated the young Kiwi to the pits for the vast majority of the race, ending a turbulent campaign in devastating fashion.
