The final round of the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship at Rally Italia Sardegna delivered one of the most intense title battles in modern rally history. Starting the event trailing championship leader Elfyn Evans by 21 points, Oliver Solberg and co-driver Elliot Edmondson put on a stunning performance to head into the final stage just one point adrift.
The fortunes of the championship swung dramatically across the 17-stage, 307km event. A late puncture for Elfyn Evans on the penultimate stage set up the first-ever Wolf Power Stage championship shootout.
Immense pressure fell on Oliver Solberg as he pushed with everything he had. He was 1.9 seconds up on Elfyn Evans' time at the final split before spearing into the bushes just two corners from home.

The mistake dropped him out of the bonus-point positions. Although he went on to win the rally overall, the championship trophy headed to Wales.
Reflecting on the heartbreak in Sardinia, as reported by Motorsport Week, Oliver Solberg expressed his pride despite the painful conclusion. First of all, he wanted to congratulate Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin for their consistency all season.
"First of all, I want to say congratulations to Elfyn and Scott. They deserve this for sure; they have been very consistent all season. That I even had a shot with my rollercoaster of a season feels incredible," said Oliver Solberg.
He admitted that belief grew throughout the weekend, making the narrow miss difficult to accept. On the Power Stage, he knew he had to push hard to beat Elfyn Evans.
"In the Power Stage I knew I had to push hard to beat Elfyn, but I wasn’t sure I was doing enough, so I tried pushing even more. Then I made a small mistake at the end, couldn’t save the car and we went off," he explained.
Despite missing out on the ultimate prize, Oliver Solberg remains proud of what he achieved in his first season with the team, stating he has no regrets.
"I tried my very best to the very end and that is all I can say. I’m not a guy that gives up. I have a lot of passion. It hurts a lot, but I have no regrets," he concluded.
