Liam Lawson ended the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with deep frustration. Starting from the pit lane after a rear-wing change, the Red Bull driver showed promising pace before an incident with Nico Hulkenberg ruined his race.
The clash occurred after the restart, where Liam Lawson made contact with Nico Hulkenberg at Turn 1. The collision damaged his front wing, forcing him to pit for a new one and losing around 30 seconds. As a result, he had to settle for 14th place, far from his true potential.
"Yeah, I had a good first lap from the pit lane and made up quite a few places. Then, at the restart, I lost part of my front wing with Nico. So yeah, I had to box for a new one and lost like 30 seconds. It's a shame we had very good speed in the race, but with the way the strategy was, obviously nobody really boxed after that, so we just had too much time to make up," Lawson told select media, including RacingNews365.
A second incident occurred at Turn 4, where Lawson again tangled with Hulkenberg. Lawson admitted he didn't see Hulkenberg because he lost his mirror, and he may have inadvertently squeezed the Audi driver. "I was next to him, and he just kept coming over at the entry to Turn 1. I wasn't trying to..." Lawson initially seemed confused when asked about the Turn 4 clash. "Probably exactly what he did to me. I probably did it to him. I lost my mirror, so I couldn't see on the right-hand side of my car. But if I squeezed him, which maybe I did, I didn't mean to. But maybe, obviously, he didn't mean to do it to me either. But it broke my front wing, and that's not what you want," he explained.
This incident is a major blow for Lawson, who is fighting to secure his seat at Red Bull. His strong start to the race had offered hope, but fate had other plans. The result also extends a string of poor performances for Lawson in 2025, increasing pressure amid speculation about his future.
With this failure, Red Bull lost valuable points in the tight constructors' championship. Meanwhile, Lawson must quickly forget the Monza nightmare and focus on the next race, where he hopes to bounce back and prove he deserves to stay with a top team.
