Alex Albon Hits Back at Fernando Alonso Over Grid Driving Standards in F1

Alonso was less than impressed with Albon after their clash at Austin

Formula 1 driver Alex Albon has openly disagreed with Fernando Alonso's outspoken criticism regarding the driving standards at the back of the grid. The war of words stems from a hard-fought on-track battle between the two drivers during the United States Grand Prix in Austin, after which the Aston Martin veteran took aim at competitors in the bottom third of the field.

Speaking during the official FIA press conference ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, Albon began by expressing his deep admiration for the double world champion, noting that he looked up to the Spanish driver throughout his childhood and formative racing years.

“Firstly, I would say that I hugely respect Fernando. I think he’s a great driver. I’ve looked up to him a lot growing up as a kid,” Albon stated when addressing the media regarding the ongoing narrative from the previous race weekend.

Addressing the context of their fierce midfield and rear-guard battles, Albon pointed out that a competitive group of drivers finds themselves fighting at the back this season, including Sergio Perez. He suggested that fierce post-race remarks are frequently fueled by the heat of competition rather than a factual assessment of overall talent.

“Obviously, post-race comments are always a little bit more in the heat of the moment, so you can always take a look at yourself,” Albon explained, emphasizing the reflective nature of drivers after intense wheel-to-wheel combat.

Furthermore, Albon rejected any notion that their particular duel in Austin crossed the line into dangerous driving. He maintained that both competitors fought hard within fair racing parameters during their dramatic sequence of corners.

“No, no, I felt we had a good scrap. Clearly, he didn’t think the same thing. But, yeah, it was a really strong battle,” he said. “Even the incident in that point itself, I thought, was very 50-50 in terms of where the cars were on track.”

Despite Albon's measured tone, Alonso doubled down on his stance during media interviews, describing the lower half of the grid as possessing a very low level of driving and questioning the opportunistic nature of Albon's moves. Informed of these doubling-down remarks, the Williams driver offered a more direct and unyielding rebuttal.

“I’ll double down on what I said as well. I have a huge respect for Fernando. I looked up to him a lot growing up as a kid. Obviously it’s not nice to hear those comments in many ways. You always see someone that you look up to. But at the same time, I don’t agree with him,” Albon affirmed.

Concluding his thoughts, Albon highlighted that the modern grid boasts a consistently high caliber of talent due to the evolution of the sport and the absence of traditional pay drivers, adding that he hopes their respective racing paths do not intersect aggressively during the upcoming Grand Prix.
