Lexus is reportedly gearing up to enter a new chapter in electrification with a next-generation electric crossover. Citing a Nikkei Asia report compiled by Carscoops, production is said to begin next autumn at a brand-new plant in Shanghai, China. While details remain scarce, the model is expected to feature advanced technology, including Giga-Casting, which allows multiple aluminum body components to be cast as a single large piece.
Giga-Casting technology is not entirely new in the automotive industry. Tesla pioneered this method, and it is gradually being adopted by more manufacturers. Ford, for instance, will use it on its upcoming Fathom model. The main advantage is significant weight reduction, which ultimately improves efficiency and driving range. For the Lexus crossover, this weight reduction is believed to boost range by several percentage points.
Lexus's production strategy for this model is notably unique. In the first year, the Japanese automaker will only produce around 1,000 units per month. However, production is expected to ramp up to tens of thousands of units annually over time. Interestingly, the model appears to be an exclusive for the Chinese market. This marks a significant shift for Lexus, which has traditionally focused on global models like the NX, RX, GX, LX, ES, LS, LM, and RZ.
Among these, the RZ is Lexus's only fully electric vehicle in a market that practically demands it. China is one of the world's largest markets for electric vehicles, and this new crossover is expected to strengthen Lexus's position in the premium EV segment there. By starting production gradually, Lexus seems to be ensuring quality and market acceptance before scaling up volumes.
The decision to manufacture in Shanghai also underscores Lexus's commitment to being closer to its key market. Local production can reduce costs and make the brand more responsive to local trends. It's a strategic move worth watching, and we'll see how the market responds to this new electric crossover from Lexus.
