Lawson's Red Bull Return at Dutch GP: A Full Circle Moment

When Liam Lawson takes to the Zandvoort circuit this weekend, it will feel like deja vu. Two years ago, he replaced an injured Daniel Ricciardo at the same venue—and now, at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, he has been called up again to fill a Red Bull seat, this time standing in for Isack Hadjar, who suffered a hand injury. It’s a full-circle moment, not just a coincidence.

For Lawson, this call-up is the fruit of patience and hard work. His brief promotion to Red Bull in 2025 ended bitterly after two pointless weekends, and he was swapped back to Racing Bulls. But instead of fading away, the 24-year-old has evolved into a more complete driver, helping Racing Bulls secure sixth place in last season’s constructors’ standings.

“I would have liked to have thought that with the right amount of time, I would have got my head around it honestly,” Lawson reflected on his short-lived stint. “Two races were... I honestly don’t even remember them. But a lot of things have happened this year that have made me a lot stronger.”

His journey has not been easy. While Hadjar was chosen by Red Bull for 2026, Lawson remained at Racing Bulls and is now actually leading rookie Arvid Lindblad 8-6 in their qualifying head-to-head. His consistency and speed this season have not gone unnoticed.

“We could tell he certainly wasn’t the same guy,” Racing Bulls boss Alan Permane said on F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast. “We just supported and helped him where we could. He worked hard in the simulator, off track and on track, and we saw that culminating with some really good performances. He’s laser-focused, more aware of the car, and works better with his engineers.”

This time, Lawson returns to Red Bull as a different driver. He is no longer rushing to prove himself but a more mature figure ready to handle the pressure. Two years ago, he only raced five times for AlphaTauri; now he brings experience and calmness he lacked before.

The Dutch GP will be a true test. Can Lawson seize this second chance to secure his future at Red Bull? Or will this be just another brief chapter? One thing is certain: this moment feels like poetic justice—a well-deserved opportunity.
