Lando Norris has delivered a pointed assessment of the 2026 Formula 1 regulation changes introduced in Miami, stating that while progress has been made, fundamental issues remain. The McLaren driver highlighted how the new rules can still penalise drivers for pushing harder.
The modifications implemented by the FIA aim to improve car behaviour, particularly in aerodynamic efficiency and energy management. However, early indications suggest that the interaction between downforce, drag, and energy systems is not yet fully optimised.
"There are still points where the faster you go, the more you get penalised. That’s not how it should be."
Technically, Norris’ concern relates to aerodynamic sensitivity and energy deployment constraints, where drivers are sometimes forced to lift or reduce throttle input to avoid performance penalties. This contradicts the fundamental racing principle of maximising speed at every opportunity.
Norris acknowledged that the changes have improved qualifying conditions, allowing drivers to push more naturally without constantly managing limitations. However, the impact in race conditions appears minimal.
"In qualifying it felt more normal, you could push without thinking about lifting early. But in the race, nothing really changes."
This highlights the contrast between single-lap performance and race stints, where energy deployment, tyre degradation, and overall car balance introduce greater complexity. Features such as “super clips” provide only marginal variation without fundamentally altering race dynamics.
Despite the criticism, Norris maintained that the changes represent a step in the right direction, even if incomplete. He also acknowledged that drivers will continue to voice concerns as part of the development process.
"We’re always going to complain, that’s what we do. But it’s a step forward, and the rest needs to come over time."
As the 2026 season progresses, further evaluation across different circuits will determine the true effectiveness of these regulation changes. Ongoing technical responses from teams and potential regulatory adjustments will be crucial in shaping the future competitive landscape of Formula 1.
