Max Verstappen has officially signed a contract extension with Red Bull Racing that will keep him at Milton Keynes until at least the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The decision ends months of speculation about the Dutchman's future, which had been linked with a possible move away or even early retirement.
The certainty was revealed after his father, Jos Verstappen, explained that the negotiation process was far from straightforward. Speaking to PlaySports, Jos emphasised that the main factor was not about having a say or influence, but rather a desire to restore calm. "It's not so much about having a say or having an impact," he said. "I think it's about restoring calm. Max also just feels really good at Red Bull. They've been there from the start of his career, and we've been with them."
Comfort and loyalty formed the foundation. Although Verstappen has been openly critical of the new technical regulations, he chose to stay. Jos added that the decision was also based on the belief that the team will be competitive again. "It felt right to stay. We hope they'll be more competitive again next year and that we can compete for wins again," he added.
Jos also highlighted the important role played by Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies. According to him, Mekies is a positive and open communicator. "I think Laurent is really a very positive person. A nice guy who's also open to communication. I think that's very important. Team bosses who have a background as an engineer understand more about what's going on with the car and within the team. That's a positive thing," Jos explained.
The decision to stay during a difficult period was not without careful consideration. Jos admitted that leaving a team not currently at its peak is a tough choice. However, he and Max see great potential behind the scenes, especially regarding the upcoming Red Bull Power Trains engine. "It's a difficult choice, but we also know what's happening behind the scenes with the [Red Bull] engine," he said. "And you also have to look at what possibilities there might be at other teams. That's why we decided to stay."
Beyond technical strategy, there is a strong emotional value. Jos believes that rebuilding success with the team that has been with Verstappen for so long will have a greater impact than moving to an already winning team. "If we can get the team back on track and winning again, that will have more impact than if he had decided to go to another team that was already winning, to continue that next year," he stressed. "I think it's more beautiful to build it up again and see if you can build a winning car once more."
With this extension, Red Bull secures the services of the four-time world champion for the long term, providing stability as the team faces a new regulatory era. Meanwhile, Verstappen will focus on returning Red Bull to the front, proving that loyalty and hard work can overcome the shortcut to instant success.
