Lando Norris voiced his frustration after qualifying only eighth for the Italian Grand Prix, calling McLaren's top-speed deficit at Monza the 'most painful thing' of the weekend. The reigning Formula 1 champion was left to fight the air alone after a planned tow from teammate Oscar Piastri fell through.
On his final Q3 lap, Oscar Piastri made an error at Turn 1 and was forced to take to the run-off, ruining Norris's chance of a slipstream benefit. This left Lando Norris to carve his own path through the air, a significant disadvantage at Monza's high-speed layout.
"The most painful thing this weekend is just the straight-line speed deficit," Norris said. He pointed out that rivals like Kimi Antonelli could set competitive times without any tow, while he needed a perfect slipstream to stay in contention.
Slipstream Dependency at the Temple of Speed
Norris explained that the team knew this would be a weak point and that it is a clear example of why they must keep pushing development. The Q3 session was the closest in F1 history, with just half a second separating the top ten, making every hundredth crucial.
Despite the setback, Norris refused to dwell on bad luck, acknowledging that his own lap wasn't perfect either. However, he insisted that the majority of the time loss came from the straights, not from his driving.
Brake Inconsistency and a Tough Battle Ahead
Beyond the aero issues, Norris also complained about inconsistent brake behavior throughout the weekend. He said the lack of confidence under braking, especially into Turn 1's heavy braking zone, was a major concern.
"It's just very inconsistent with what the brakes are doing," he explained. "When the brakes are doing what they did today, you have no confidence."
Starting from eighth, Norris faces an uphill battle to secure a strong result. But with the championship fight heating up, every point will be vital in his quest to retain the title.
