Formula 1 drivers faced a massive test of patience during a chaotic qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos as torrential rain disrupted the schedule. Moments after the green light, heavy downpours forced race control to throw the red flags within the opening two minutes. The lengthy stoppage kept the entire paddock waiting for more than an hour and twenty minutes while track marshals worked tirelessly to clear standing water from the circuit.

Once the session resumed, drivers were immediately forced out on extreme wet weather tires to cope with the treacherous conditions on the 3,409-kilometer track. It was only toward the end of the second segment that the racing line dried sufficiently to allow a switch to intermediate compounds. Teams that timed their tire change to perfection reaped the rewards, while several major contenders were caught out by the rapidly shifting grip levels.

Amidst the tricky track evolution, Kimi Antonelli had to fight hard just to scrape through into the final pole position shootout, finishing the second segment in tenth position. Warned by his engineers that weather windows would likely grant only one flying lap before the rain intensified again, the newly crowned world champion unleashed everything he had on the wet asphalt.

Despite experiencing a heart-stopping moment at Turn 5 where he nearly lost control of his machine, the young Italian managed to clock a competitive lap time of 1:28.095. That effort placed him third fastest overall behind pole-sitter Lando Norris and his own teammate. Due to a grid penalty incurred by his garage neighbor, Antonelli was promoted to the front row and will start Sunday's race from second place.

Reflecting on the frantic afternoon in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team garage, the Bologna native admitted that the day's wet conditions presented a steep learning curve. "It was very, very tricky today. To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect because this was my first time driving here in wet conditions, so I had no prior reference points," Antonelli told reporters.

He candidly discussed the mistake that nearly cost him a strong grid position during the decisive moments of Q3. "I struggled a bit on the intermediates, and I nearly crashed out at Turn 5 because I made a huge mistake. I simply didn't do a good enough job there. However, it was enough to secure third place, and now all our focus shifts entirely toward the race," he added.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Grand Prix under unpredictable skies, the talented youngster emphasized preparation over bold predictions. "We first need to see what the weather does. But of course, we will prepare for every possible scenario, and if it turns out wet again, we now know much better what needs to be done. Let's wait and see, as the weather has been extremely unpredictable so far." Read our in-depth analysis and stay tuned for more live updates on Formula 1 action.
