Naomi Schiff, Sky Sports F1 pundit, has hailed Kimi Antonelli as a "generational talent" after the Mercedes driver charged from 19th to victory at his home Italian Grand Prix. The 20-year-old's stunning drive at Monza was a masterclass in racecraft and composure, leaving the Tifosi in awe.
Starting from the back of the grid, Antonelli carved through the field with surgical precision. A perfectly timed virtual safety car allowed him to pit for fresh medium tyres, while his team-mate George Russell stayed out on old hards. What followed was a relentless chase that saw Antonelli reel in and overtake Russell, securing his seventh career win in just his second F1 season.
Schiff, known for her sharp insights, did not hold back her praise. "Today, everybody is so impressed by what Kimi Antonelli has done. And obviously, to have a home hero like him who clearly proved today the generational talent that he is," she said. "Not only did he climb through the field, but then after that pitstop, he had to close up that gap again, and he just did it. Incredible."
The most riveting moment for Schiff was watching Antonelli close in on Russell. "It took him about six or seven laps before he was behind George. George and Max were going at it as well in the beginning. And then I just had a feeling in my heart like, 'Oh gosh, if George looks in the mirrors now and realises his team-mate is already behind him, oh my God, I would have sunk a little bit in that moment,'" she recalled with a grin.
With this win, Antonelli strengthens his title bid. After back-to-back victories in China and Japan, he has now won four more before the summer break, and his Italian GP triumph marks his seventh career win. He leads the championship by 66 points over Russell, making him the youngest driver to top the standings and a serious contender to run away with the title.
