Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix from pole position after his impressive 1m 34.035s lap time stood firm through a dramatic Q3 session at COTA. The thrilling qualifying hour witnessed intense battles and crucial track limit infringements that ultimately reshuffled the front row of the grid for Sunday's race.
"We got pole, so we will try and win for tomorrow," Antonelli said. "But Max has been very quick and Isack Hadjar did an incredible job in qualifying so it will not be easy. But we will try and get a good start, lead into Turn 1 and set the pace."
The competitive tone was set early in Q1 when Charles Leclerc established an initial benchmark before Max Verstappen slotted in right behind him. Drama unfolded as Fernando Alonso managed to advance into Q2 despite flames flickering near his exhaust, while Lando Norris surged to the top of the timesheets in the dying moments of the opening segment.

Q2 pushed performance levels further into the 1m 34s bracket, with Verstappen posting a 1m 34.371s effort on used soft tires. Both Red Bull machines executed a clean progression into the pole position shootout using only a single set of soft compound rubber.
The tension culminated in Q3 as Verstappen received an early black-and-white flag for driving unnecessarily slowly. Antonelli immediately laid down the gauntlet with a stellar opening run, leaving Verstappen complaining about a lack of grip and balance. On the final sequence of flying laps, Verstappen's fastest time was deleted due to track limits violations, handing the pole position to Antonelli while promoting Hadjar into the top three.
"Just Q3 was not good. Q1, Q2 was nice but on the last two sets I had no balance, started to slide a lot," Verstappen reflected. "Just not very happy with Q3 to be honest, not what I wanted, not what I expected but P2 – I’ll take it."
Hadjar admitted that a maiden pole position was within touching distance despite facing handling hurdles throughout the practice sessions. "I’m happy with Q3 P3 because it has been incredibly hard for me since the start of the weekend. Struggled with car balance, this morning I couldn’t even set a lap time on the soft due to the car balance," he explained. "Happy to be third even though I feel we had a shot at pole. Had a massive tailwind on my lap, so I am a little bit gutted."
