Kimi Antonelli can make F1 history on Sunday in Mexico

The championship-deciding weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has turned into a severe test for Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian driver has openly admitted to feeling significantly more tense than usual, compounded by physical struggles as he battles back to full health following a severe illness that severely disrupted his preparation ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The ordeal began on Thursday when the rising star was forced to skip all media day commitments due to a high fever and stomach issues that left him feeling extremely unwell. Although his condition has since stabilized, lingering fatigue and depleted energy levels have heavily tested his mental resilience as he stands on the brink of securing his maiden Formula 1 world championship crown.

The psychological burden has been amplified by relentless paddock chatter declaring the championship practically wrapped up. Dealing with this external noise required immense concentration, as the rookie tried to block out distractions while focusing entirely on extracting peak performance from his machinery throughout the high-altitude race weekend in Mexico.

Technically, the qualifying session brought its own set of hurdles. Antonelli struggled to stitch together a clean lap on fresh tyres during Q3, ultimately settling for a second-row start in fourth place. Interestingly, his primary title rivals, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, locked out the grid directly ahead of him, setting the stage for a tense tactical showdown.

"I feel very tired to be fair; I still haven't recovered completely," Antonelli said after qualifying. "It hasn't been an easy weekend to be fair, and definitely I've been a bit more tense than usual, especially when you keep hearing, wherever you go, any time of the day, the same thing, and people telling me that the title is already done."

"And knowing myself, I've been trying to block this noise as much as possible, but it hasn't been easy. Definitely, I've been a bit more tense today, but I feel decent in Q2, especially on the used tyre. Then in Q3 on the new tyre, I struggled to put the lap together, just to find the grip. But I feel we have a good chance tomorrow, still P4, and we saved a set of new tyres, so hopefully we can use that and move forward," he elaborated regarding his qualifying performance.

Reflecting on his health battle, the Mercedes charger revealed the true extent of his illness on Thursday before focusing on a strict recovery routine. Aiming to fix several nights of poor sleep, he noted plans to rest extensively and regain his peak physical energy ahead of the crucial Grand Prix lights out.
