Formula 1 race officials have proactively issued explicit clarifications to all teams and drivers ahead of the race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. This decisive move aims to prevent a recurrence of the opening-lap chaos witnessed last year, which saw multiple front-runners bypass the designated track limits during a frantic start.
The paddock remembers the dramatic scenes from last season when Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Scuderia Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton went four-wide into Turn 1 on the opening lap, forcing both Verstappen and Leclerc across the grass.
That chaotic start involved nearly a fifth of the grid cutting the corner, prompting fierce frustration from George Russell who watched from a front-row seat directly behind the leading group and openly questioned why drivers making braking errors could retain positions without penalties.

Addressing those concerns, the stewards have officially clarified that on the opening lap or following any safety car restart, all cars through Turns 1 to 3 and Turns 4 to 6 will default to being considered both attacking and defending simultaneously.
The updated guidelines dictate that leaving the track and maintaining position against closely trailing rivals will be deemed gaining a lasting advantage unless the position is properly yielded by Turn 4 or Turn 12, ensuring strict accountability on race day.
