Ryo Hirakawa Laments Costly Traffic That Ruined Q2 Hopes in Mexico

Ryo Hirakawa faced a dramatic and unexpected Formula 1 debut weekend with Haas after receiving a sudden Saturday morning call-up to step in for Esteban Ocon at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.

Despite the immense short notice, the seasoned Le Mans winner and World Endurance champion immediately threw himself into the intense program during FP3. Working closely with race engineer Laura Mueller, he maximized every single lap to fine-tune setup, practice starts, and pit stop procedures to bridge the experience gap.

Heading into the qualifying session, the Japanese driver showed promising pace in sectors one and three, proving he had the raw speed to match expectations. However, a disrupted middle sector ruined his final flying lap as dirty air and traffic compromised his aerodynamic grip.

"I had traffic from Turn 6 and also in the high-speed sections, so I lost a lot of downforce," Ryo Hirakawa stated. "It was easily possible to reach Q2, which is a shame for me, but still it's nice to be here, so I can't complain much."

Ultimately settling for 19th on the grid, his underlying pace displayed incredible resilience under pressure, establishing a solid foundation for his maiden Grand Prix appearance.
