Takamoto Katsuta was left with few positive memories from the South American leg of the WRC season. Both Rally Paraguay and Rally Chile ended in similar fashion: early crashes and a fightback from adversity. But amidst the disappointment, there are valuable lessons to be learned.
In Paraguay, Katsuta crashed out on the very first stage, effectively ending his hopes of scoring points. However, he refused to give up. In Chile, he managed to salvage three points: one from Super Sunday and two from the Power Stage. Though small, he remains grateful.
Lessons from South America
Katsuta admits that both rallies provided harsh lessons. "Small things can completely destroy the whole rally. Especially if the beginning of the rally is not ideal, of course it is difficult. But you just need to stay strong, because if you start to back off or become afraid, you lose your pace for sure. Then you cannot fight for anything," he said.
The Toyota driver emphasised the importance of mental resilience. "You just need to stay strong. Anything can happen to anybody. That is something I have definitely learned. Normally, I take too much upon myself, but this time I need to look forward and think about how to come back stronger at the next rally. That is the most important thing," he added.
In Chile, Katsuta was co-driven by James Fulton, who stood in for the injured Aaron Johnston. Katsuta praised Fulton. "He is very, very good. No complaints and no difficulties at all. He did a really good job, and that was very impressive," he said.
Power Stage and a Spectacular Jump
On the rally-closing Power Stage, Katsuta launched his car an impressive distance. He admitted to having doubts and asked Fulton multiple times. "I asked James many times: 'Are you sure? Can I go? Are you absolutely sure I can go?' He just said, 'Yeah, yeah, go for it,'" Katsuta laughed.
Despite the less-than-ideal results, Katsuta remains optimistic. He appreciates the team's support and is determined to bounce back. "I still really appreciate all the support from the team," he concluded.
Katsuta's WRC season has been full of ups and downs. But his never-give-up attitude is commendable. We look forward to his next rally.
