At the Madring circuit, Taito Kato and Tuukka Taponen stole the show in Formula 3's double qualifying at the Spanish GP. Kato conquered Qualifying 1, while Taponen dominated Qualifying 2, marking a weekend filled with drama and tension.
A new format was introduced in Spain: two qualifying sessions, one Sprint Race, and two Feature Races. Qualifying 1 set the grid for the Sprint Race and the first Feature Race, while Qualifying 2 determined the grid for the second Feature Race on Sunday. With the championship to be decided this weekend, the battle between Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater intensifies. Only 15 points separate the two, and everything is at stake at Madring.
Qualifying 1 began with Maciej Gladysz leading the pack out of the pits. Taito Kato immediately took the top spot with a time of 1:51.127, followed by Alex Powell in second. However, drama struck championship leader Freddie Slater. He reported issues with his TRIDENT car over the radio but still pushed hard, setting the first purple sector and a time of 1:51.215. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to displace Kato. Pedro Clerot then took the top spot with 1:50.547, while Kato improved to 1:50.639 and had to settle for second. Jin Nakamura completed the top three, three-tenths behind Clerot with six minutes remaining.
Slater chose to pit for new tyres, the only driver to do so. Others stayed on hard tyres to save a set for the second qualifying. However, Slater's troubles weren't over. He reported his car was 'crabbing' and 'broken' upon returning to the track. "The front right is not working and the throttle is stuck open! It doesn't stop!" he said on the radio, adding to the drama at Trident. Meanwhile, Tuukka Taponen slipped into third, and Ugochukwu was fourth, just 0.142 seconds behind Kato.
Brando Badoer had to pit after touching the wall on his flying lap, despite being only 20th. The Rodin team worked quickly to repair the car before the session ended. This incident added to the list of dramas in a tightly contested first qualifying session.
In Qualifying 2, Tuukka Taponen was imperious and seized pole position with the fastest time. Meanwhile, Kato, who had shown speed in the first session, couldn't replicate his peak performance. The championship battle between Ugochukwu and Slater remained tight, with Slater seemingly still hampered by technical issues.
With these results, the grid for the Sprint Race and both Feature Races is set. Kato will start the Sprint Race from pole, while Taponen leads the second Feature Race. Will Kato and Taponen continue their dominance, or will Ugochukwu and Slater bounce back? All will be revealed on the Madring track.
