The opening practice session of the MotoGP weekend at Phillip Island in 2026 delivered high drama featuring home hero Jack Miller. The Townsville-born rider had just posted the fastest lap time of the session when he suffered a sharp low-side crash at Doohan Corner, tumbling through the gravel trap.
Despite the high-speed nature of the tumble, the Australian rider escaped without any injuries. He promptly returned to the pit lane to grab his second motorcycle for the practice starts scheduled at the conclusion of the 45-minute session. His earlier benchmark time was ultimately eclipsed as rival contenders pushed for faster laps late in the run.
Ducati's Marc Marquez ultimately claimed the session-best lap with a 1:27.985s despite running on older tires. Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez finished just 0.048 seconds adrift in second place, while Miller wound up 0.135s off the pace after both rivals elected to bolt on fresh rubber in the dying minutes of the track action.
The competitive top 10 order was rounded out by a formidable group of riders including Marco Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta, Jorge Martin, Ai Ogura, Fabio Quartararo, and Fabio Di Giannantonio, showcasing intense early form across various manufacturers on the twisty coastal layout.
The session was further disrupted by additional dramatic moments, including Fernandez suffering a separate fall at Siberia that briefly raised concerns over his finger injury, alongside an engine failure for KTM's Brad Binder and a heavy off for replacement rider Iker Lecuona.
