Marc Marquez made a late surge to claim the top spot at the end of the opening practice session for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, with the dramatic morning session punctuated by several violent crashes.
The Ducati title contender edged out previous pacesetter Raul Fernandez by just 0.048 seconds, remarkably setting his benchmark lap on significantly older tyres compared to the fresh rubber used by the Trackhouse Aprilia rider.
Fernandez was notably involved in one of three heavy incidents during the session, carefully protecting his hand which was previously injured at Mandalika two weeks prior as he tumbled through the gravel trap all the way to the barrier. He emerged unhurt and managed to rejoin the track on his second machine.

Meanwhile, local favourite Jack Miller enjoyed a brief moment at the summit of the timing screens aboard his Pramac Yamaha before immediately crashing at the first corner moments after setting the pace. Miller's earlier effort still secured him third position overall in the classification.
The most alarming incident of the morning befell stand-in rider Iker Lecuona, deputising for the injured Fermin Aldeguer at Gresini Ducati, whose motorcycle bounced violently off the tyre wall and flew directly over him before coming to a complete halt. Fortunately, he also walked away uninjured from the terrifying ordeal.
