Italian GP FP2: Russell Fastest, Leclerc Close Behind

George Russell picked up where he left off, setting the fastest time in Free Practice 2 (FP2) for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Friday. The Mercedes driver edged out home hero Charles Leclerc by a slender margin, much to the delight of the Tifosi who packed the grandstands.

The session was lively from the moment the pit lane opened, with several big names returning after sitting out FP1. Max Verstappen was back in the Red Bull, while Alex Albon played catch-up after missing the opening session.

There were a few heart-in-mouth moments, including Lando Norris taking to the grass to avoid a slow-moving Lance Stroll exiting the pits. Lewis Hamilton also had a lock-up at Turn 1 and had to bail down the escape road. But the real drama came from Leclerc, who had a brief moment that had fans gasping, yet he still managed to post a competitive lap.

Youngster Kimi Antonelli continued to impress, slotting into third place and showing consistency under pressure at his home race. The top ten at the end of FP2 read: Russell, Leclerc, Antonelli, Norris, Hamilton, Piastri, Lindblad, Bearman, Verstappen, and Tsunoda.

Implications

With just one more practice session before qualifying, teams are now fine-tuning their setups. Russell's pace in the middle sector is a warning to his rivals, while Leclerc will be determined to deliver a strong result in front of the passionate crowd. The stage is set for a thrilling qualifying session at the Temple of Speed.
