IndyCar Sets First Oval Test of New IR-28 Chassis at IMS

IndyCar has finally locked in a key date in the development of its next-generation machine. The Dallara IR-28 chassis will make its oval debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on September 9-10, fitted with the superspeedway aero configuration.

Alexander Rossi and Alex Palou are once again the chosen test drivers, reprising their roles from the initial road course running a month ago. Both drivers and officials praised the build quality and functionality of the new chassis during those first laps, with only minor teething issues and no major flaws detected.

Next week's test could see higher speeds, given that current cars can exceed 230 mph around the IMS oval. The IR-28 package is designed with the ultimate goal of setting new records at Indianapolis, though it seems unlikely the car will be pushed to record-breaking pace during these early aero tests.

For fans, there's a rare treat: the viewing mounds inside the Speedway near the IMS Museum will be open, allowing spectators to watch the car hammer the banking in person.

Testing will continue throughout the offseason, including evaluations of dirty-air performance once multiple functional chassis are available. But before that, IndyCar still needs to integrate the hybrid system and new engines from Honda and Chevrolet to truly test the 2028 design. Those steps and more will be completed through next year's testing program, leading up to the car's official launch.

With this milestone, IndyCar edges closer to a new technical era. Will the IR-28 be immediately competitive on ovals? We'll get our first hints next week.
