The Red Bull Racing team has revealed how an AI-powered race strategy tool developed alongside Oracle is now playing a crucial role in helping make split-second decisions during Formula 1 grands prix. This advanced technology is designed to deliver tactical recommendations directly in the heat of on-track competition.
In an interview, Red Bull head of technical and performance partnerships Jack Harington explained that the tool initially began as a search mechanism to help engineers interpret complex F1 regulations and past rulings. Over time, the software evolved into an agentic AI capable of drawing from vast pools of data and recommending actionable steps during a live race.
This technological leap was further cemented when Red Bull and Oracle announced a multi-year extension of their title partnership. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle AI now underpin the debut of Red Bull Ford Powertrains' next-generation hybrid power unit, advanced race strategy simulations, and a pioneering AI-driven strategy agent.
A clear testament to the system's effectiveness was showcased during the Italian Grand Prix. On the opening lap at Monza, Max Verstappen ran wide at the first chicane while battling for the lead. According to Harington, the AI agent immediately advised the team to hand the position back to avoid a potential race penalty from the stewards.
Although that recommendation initially went against the team's immediate assessment, Red Bull followed the instruction. The decision paid off as the driver escaped any penalty, swiftly retook the lead, and ultimately triumphed to win the race by a commanding margin over the chasing pack.
