MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Honda is again at the center of attention as indications point to further on-track testing of its 850cc MotoGP prototype at Sepang in April 2026, with Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami present for a private multi-day session.

The presence of both test riders from Honda Racing Corporation has fuelled speculation that the 2027-spec machine has returned to track action. The prototype previously made its debut at the same Malaysian circuit in December, marking the first step in Honda’s preparation for the next regulatory cycle.

During that initial outing, Nakagami offered positive feedback, particularly regarding the bike’s reduced weight compared to the current generation.

“The first impression is that it’s super light. I was quite surprised in those conditions. It felt quite nice,” Nakagami said.

The December test was heavily affected by rain, limiting data collection. However, current conditions at Sepang are reported to be dry and stable, potentially allowing for a more comprehensive evaluation. This could also mark Espargaro’s first opportunity to ride the 850cc prototype, having previously focused on development work for the 2026 bike.

Espargaro joined Honda as a test rider after retiring from full-time MotoGP competition, following three premier-class victories with Aprilia. He is now working alongside technical director Romano Albesiano on the long-term development of Honda’s future machinery.

According to earlier plans, Nakagami was expected to lead the initial phase of 850cc testing before expanding involvement to other riders as the project progressed. The current test suggests that Honda is advancing to the next stage of its development programme.

At present, Honda and KTM are the only manufacturers to have confirmed on-track testing of 850cc MotoGP machinery, highlighting their early commitment to the 2027 regulations.

Those regulations will introduce significant changes, including reduced engine capacity to 850cc, a ban on ride-height devices, and stricter aerodynamic limitations aimed at improving safety and controlling performance.

A major additional shift will be the transition from Michelin to Pirelli as the exclusive tyre supplier. This change is expected to influence overall bike behaviour and performance characteristics.

Pirelli has already begun collecting data through joint and manufacturer-specific testing programmes, including an initial group test at Misano last year. These efforts are focused on adapting tyre compounds and construction to suit different circuits and the demands of the new 850cc machines.

Overall, the Sepang test represents a critical phase in Honda’s early development cycle for MotoGP’s next era. With significant regulatory changes on the horizon, building a competitive technical foundation now will be essential as the championship approaches the transition to 2027.
