The high-profile alliance between Aston Martin and Honda has faced a challenging start in 2026, grappling with a series of performance and reliability setbacks. These issues included a noticeable lack of power, severe power unit vibrations, pronounced turbo lag, and persistent drivability concerns on the track.

Under the ADUO mechanism, the manufacturer will be granted two developmental upgrades for the 2027 season, offering a crucial lifeline to catch up with rival engine builders. The updates will slightly tweak the power unit to extract more internal combustion power, thereby reducing the heavy reliance on complex battery systems.

Combustion has historically been a troubled area for the engineering group, but Chief Engineer Shintaro Orihara remains optimistic. He believes that twin upgrade packages, including a vital mid-season deployment, can propel the Japanese manufacturer and its partner back into championship contention.

"We need some steps to catch up to the top competitors, and our target is to bring some steps for round one," Orihara told media. He candidly admitted that even by the opening round, they would likely not yet be considered a top competitor, necessitating an additional developmental leap later in the year.

"So, as Adrian Newey has said, our target is to take another big step in the middle of the season, let's say maybe round eight in Monaco. That is our roadmap, and we are working based on that roadmap," Orihara added, emphasizing their core weak point in combustion performance for the upcoming regulations.

Amid paddock speculation regarding potential alternative power unit suppliers for future seasons, team management firmly shut down rumors, reaffirming total dedication to their long-term partnership with the iconic brand that recently celebrated its milestone 500th Grand Prix appearance.
