Carlos Sainz has expressed major surprise following a controversial start-line incident at the United States Grand Prix involving rookie Arvid Lindblad. The Williams driver was squeezed dangerously close to the pit wall along the main straight during a frantic opening sequence.

The Spaniard capitalized on another strong getaway off the line and attempted to force his way through alongside his rival's Racing Bulls machine. However, the door was slammed shut in a tight defensive move that resulted in Sainz's car brushing against the concrete wall at high speed.

While catastrophic contact was averted, the impact inflicted severe front-wing damage that completely derailed the initial phase of the race. Sainz was forced into an untimely pit stop for a replacement nose cone, losing crucial seconds and ultimately tumbling down the order to finish one lap down in 18th position.

To the utter disbelief of the Williams camp, the race stewards elected not to investigate the clash, letting the Racing Bulls driver escape without any form of post-race sanction or grid penalty for the aggressive squeeze.

Reflecting on the near-miss, Sainz emphasized the extreme danger posed by the maneuver. "I'm surprised he got away with that because, obviously, he's putting someone in the wall and creating what could have potentially been a very big accident," Sainz told the media. "I backed out in time, but I picked up a lot of front-wing damage, which compromised my first stint. On top of that, obviously a slow pit stop to change the front wing, seven, eight seconds extra, but then I managed to recover from there, and I settled down into a decent pace for the rest of the race."

Sainz went further by drawing comparisons to past disciplinary actions he has faced throughout his career, questioning why a dual standard appears to exist regarding aggressive racing enforcement.

"We are all to very high standards," Sainz added. "It's just that sometimes someone has a bit of an off moment, which always happens in F1. My opinion is that Arvid was maybe too much on me, but we've all been too much one or two days. What I'm surprised is that when you're too much, you get away with it. Whenever I've been too much, I've never got away with it. I'm surprised that someone got away with it because it was a pretty nasty moment there on the wall."
