Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Honda has confirmed that countermeasures to resolve the severe vibration issue affecting its power unit may not be ready until the Japanese Grand Prix at the earliest. The delay leaves Aston Martin facing the likelihood of another challenging weekend at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey had already highlighted the seriousness of the problem ahead of the season-opening race in Melbourne. According to Newey, the vibrations generated by the power unit were not only compromising the car’s chassis and reliability but were also being transmitted through the steering wheel to the hands of drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, potentially risking long-term nerve damage.

The issue was evident throughout the Australian Grand Prix weekend at Albert Park. Stroll was unable to participate in qualifying due to power unit complications, while Alonso retired after 21 laps during the race. Stroll continued longer but ultimately completed only 43 laps. Both drivers had earlier returned to the track after extended pit lane adjustments when it initially appeared they had retired from the race.

Heading into the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit, Aston Martin is expected to confront similar difficulties. The challenge is intensified by the sprint weekend format, which provides teams with only a single practice session before competitive sessions begin.

Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe, who attended the Melbourne race, expressed hope that the issue would be resolved before Honda’s home event at Suzuka scheduled for March 27–29.

“At this point we have not decided exactly where we will go, but first we want to implement thorough vibration countermeasures before Suzuka and reach a stage where the power unit can be used without problems,” Watanabe told Autosport Japan.

He added that closer cooperation between Honda’s development base in Sakura and Aston Martin’s headquarters in Silverstone would be crucial to accelerating the solution.

“Sakura will of course do its best to achieve this, but I think it will also be important to further deepen our collaboration with Silverstone,” he explained.

Watanabe also stressed that the current working structure between Honda and Aston Martin needs to evolve to improve development efficiency.

“We have to speed up development, and that doesn’t simply mean increasing the power of the power unit. It’s about how we develop it together with the car and accelerate progress as one team,” he said.

With the technical fix not expected until at least the Japanese Grand Prix, Aston Martin may continue to face performance and reliability challenges during the early rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season as the team works closely with Honda to resolve the vibration issue.
