Greg Murphy never imagined he'd experience the most authentic classic racing atmosphere in the world. An invitation from the Duke of Richmond brought him to Goodwood Revival, an event far removed from the Festival of Speed he attended last year. At the legendary Goodwood circuit, Murphy didn't just show up—he raced two iconic British machines: a Mini Cooper S and a Jaguar E-Type.
Goodwood Revival is no ordinary race. The event recreates the heyday of the Goodwood circuit between 1948 and 1966, complete with period-correct clothing rules in the paddock. "The Revival is like nothing else, it is absolutely unique and something you can only get full context of by visiting the event," Murphy told Speedcafe. "The scale and detail of the event is hard to fathom, it is much, much more than a motorsport event."
Murphy was paired with two legendary British machines. He raced a Mini Cooper S owned by Martin Overington in the St Mary's Trophy, then shared Nikolaus Ditting's Jaguar E-Type in the RAC Tourist Trophy. The 3.8km Goodwood circuit, with its fast, sweeping corners, immediately impressed him. "The circuit is old school fast and demands utter respect," he said. "The handful of practice laps were nowhere near enough to get a handle of it, but regardless, it is a special experience and a privilege to drive on."
In the St Mary's Trophy, Murphy had to fight hard. The race is split into two heats: one for guest drivers, one for car owners. Despite finishing 25th in his heat, Murphy won a spirited battle against fellow Mini drivers Patrick Watts and Tony Jardine. What made the event even more special was the star-studded entry list featuring names like Jenson Button, Matt Neal, Dario Franchitti, Andy Priaulx, David Brabham, Helio Castroneves, and Jimmie Johnson. "I had a great race with Patrick Watts in the St Mary's Trophy and had a ball in the E-Type, albeit being off the pace," Murphy added.
Together with Ditting, Murphy finished 19th in the 60-minute RAC TT Trophy, won by Lukas Halusa/Andre Lotterer in another E-Type. Meanwhile, Australian James Davison won the Whitsun Trophy for Sports-Racing Prototypes (1960-66) in a McLaren-Chevrolet M1B. The event also paid tribute to Sir Jack Brabham, with a fleet of Brabham racing cars taking to the circuit 60 years after his first F1 title with his own team.
Murphy must return to Australia in time for the Bathurst 1000, where he'll again be on television commentary duties. This Goodwood experience clearly added to his knowledge and love for racing history. After all, he got to feel what it was like to compete in motorsport's golden era, where technology wasn't as advanced, but driver bravery and skill were truly tested.
Goodwood Revival 2024 was a huge success, and Murphy's participation further proves that modern drivers can appreciate the roots of racing history. We look forward to Murphy's next moves, both at Bathurst and other historic events.
